Millerite

NiS

This sample of millerite is displayed in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Millerite is a sulfide mineral of nickel with the composition NiS. The sample at left is about 15 cm across and is from Sterling mine, Antwerp, New York. It's caption reads "The delicate tuft of needlelike millerite crystals grew to fill a pocket in hematite, creating t his world-famous specimen."

This sample of millerite is about 4x4 cm and is from Hall's Gap, Kentucky. It shows the characteristic crystal whiskers.

This sample of millerite is about 3x6 cm and is from Littfeld, Nord Rhein-Westphalen, Germany.

This large sample of millerite resembles a mound of moss. It is about 13x20 cm and is from Neunkirchen, Nord Rhein-Westphalen, Germany. Closer examination reveals the crystal whiskers.
