AstatineAstatine is a halogen which has no stable isotopes. It was prepared in 1940 by bombarding bismuth with high-energy alpha particles (helium ions). The first isotope synthesized was At-211 which has a half-life of 7.2 hr. At-210 was produced and found to have a half-life of about 8.3 hr. Astatine has the most metallic-like properties of any of the halogens. Astatine is highly carcinogenic: Mammary and pituitary tumors have been induced in laboratory animals by a single injection.
